San Diego, CA (September 2, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash involving a suspected impaired driver occurred late Monday night on the southbound I-15 near the Mira Mesa Blvd offramp, leaving at least one person injured and blocking multiple lanes of traffic. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the scene just before 11:00 p.m.
According to CHP incident logs, a white Mazda CX-7 SUV collided with a roadside wall and came to rest perpendicular across the #3 lane, with at least one occupant still inside the vehicle. The crash prompted multiple 911 calls reporting a disabled vehicle with no lights obstructing traffic, raising immediate safety concerns for other motorists.
CHP officers detained one individual at the scene under suspicion of DUI (“HBD” – has been drinking). Emergency responders confirmed that at least one person required medical attention, with ambulance services (code 1141) en route. Additional units were requested for traffic breaks as lanes remained blocked while cleanup and investigation were underway.
Guardian Tow was dispatched to remove the disabled vehicle, and CHP noted that the estimated response time for their units was 25–30 minutes following the initial call.
As of the latest update, the crash remains under investigation by CHP’s San Diego Division.
DUI-Related Crashes Remain a Threat on Southern California Freeways
Monday night’s crash on southbound I-15 near Mira Mesa Blvd is a stark reminder of the continued dangers posed by impaired driving. When collisions occur on high-speed roadways such as I-15—especially at night—the risk to life and property increases dramatically. In this case, a suspected DUI resulted in a vehicle becoming disabled in the middle of traffic, a scenario that could have led to far more serious injuries or secondary crashes.
San Diego’s I-15 corridor is one of the region’s busiest freeway routes, connecting residential areas like Mira Mesa to key commercial zones and downtown. Accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers on these freeways are all too common, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours.
The presence of a vehicle perpendicular to the flow of traffic in a live lane, with no functioning lights, significantly heightens the chance of high-speed collisions. CHP’s timely intervention—detaining the impaired driver and coordinating medical and towing services—likely prevented further harm to others on the road.
For victims of DUI-related crashes, the aftermath can be physically, emotionally, and legally overwhelming. Even non-life-threatening injuries can require long-term treatment, and victims may be left facing medical bills, lost wages, or trauma-related challenges.
If you or someone you love has been hurt in a crash involving an impaired driver, it’s crucial to seek both medical care and legal support as early as possible.
