San Diego, CA (August 5, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 near Via De La Valle resulted in multiple injuries Tuesday afternoon, leading to a large-scale emergency response and significant traffic delays in the area.
The California Highway Patrol responded to the crash around 3:47 p.m. on the southbound side of I-5 near the Via De La Valle exit. Reports confirmed at least five vehicles were involved, including a silver Toyota Camry, a Ford Excursion, a black BMW, and a brown Chevrolet. Some of the vehicles were found in the HOV lane while others had been pushed onto the right-hand shoulder.
Emergency responders, including fire crews and medical personnel, assessed the scene and provided treatment to the injured parties. At least one ambulance was dispatched (1141 Enroute), and several individuals required care for moderate injuries. The exact number of those hospitalized has not yet been confirmed.
Due to the severity of the crash and the number of vehicles involved, both the carpool and right-hand lanes were blocked for a significant time. CHP officers and Freeway Service Patrol units worked to manage traffic flow and coordinate vehicle removals. The incident was officially cleared by CHP shortly before 5:00 p.m., but residual delays continued for commuters heading southbound into San Diego.
We extend our best wishes to all those affected by this crash and hope for their full recovery.
Highway Crash Dangers in Southern California
Major freeways like Interstate 5 serve as lifelines through San Diego County, but their high speeds and dense traffic volumes make them prime locations for multi-vehicle collisions. The crash at Via De La Valle involved multiple lanes and numerous vehicles, demonstrating just how quickly freeway conditions can spiral into a serious safety situation.
Accidents in carpool and high-speed lanes are especially hazardous, often involving chain-reaction impacts due to high traffic density and short reaction times. Even when speed limits are obeyed, drivers are at risk when visibility is reduced or when surrounding vehicles swerve or brake unexpectedly.
For those injured in freeway crashes, recovery often involves much more than just physical healing. Navigating hospital care, insurance claims, lost income, and emotional distress can overwhelm even the most prepared individuals. That’s why accessing trusted guidance and support is critical in the aftermath of a serious accident.
Ongoing efforts in San Diego County include increased freeway patrols, improved incident response coordination, and public awareness campaigns focused on safe freeway driving. Still, drivers must remain alert and prepared to respond to sudden roadway changes, especially in multi-lane environments.
