San Francisco, CA (August 12, 2025) – One person was killed and another seriously injured Saturday morning in a high-speed single-vehicle collision on southbound Interstate 280 near the Cesar Chavez St exit. The crash was reported at approximately 7:12 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials said a black Hyundai Ioniq left the roadway and crashed, leaving both occupants with severe injuries. Neither was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. Paramedics attempted life-saving measures on the male passenger, believed to be in his 30s and from Santa Clara County, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:50 a.m. The female driver suffered major injuries to her lower extremities and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor. Alcohol and drugs are not thought to have played a role in the crash. Two lanes of I-280 were closed for about 45 minutes as emergency crews worked the scene and investigators collected evidence.
We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the man who lost his life and wish the injured woman a full recovery.
Single-Vehicle Accidents in California
Single-vehicle crashes can have devastating outcomes, particularly when speed and lack of seat belt use are factors. On major routes like I-280, drivers often travel at high speeds, which reduces reaction time and increases the severity of injuries in the event of a collision. The stretch of freeway near Cesar Chavez St is a heavily traveled corridor where even small errors can have deadly consequences.
In this incident, authorities noted that neither occupant was wearing a seat belt—a decision that greatly increases the risk of fatal injury in a crash. California law requires all occupants to wear restraints, and safety officials continue to stress that this simple step is one of the most effective ways to prevent loss of life.
