San Francisco, CA (August 4, 2025) – A three-vehicle collision on southbound US-101 near the I-280 south connector caused injuries and significant traffic disruption Sunday morning, with emergency crews responding to the busy freeway interchange just north of Exit 431.
The crash occurred around 8:35 AM and involved a gray Honda SUV, a black 2019 Mitsubishi SUV, and a black BMW. According to CHP incident records, two of the vehicles were left blocking lanes one and two, while a third came to rest on the right-hand shoulder. Initial reports also indicated visible smoke and possible minor fire damage, prompting a response from San Francisco Fire crews.
Emergency medical personnel evaluated those involved and confirmed injuries at the scene. At least one vehicle required a tow, and CHP categorized the collision as an injury crash (1181). The driver of the black BMW declined medical attention and was able to drive the vehicle from the scene. One lane remained closed during the investigation and cleanup, while traffic was funneled through lanes 1–4 until full clearance was achieved around 9:07 AM.
Authorities are investigating the sequence of the collision, which may have involved lane changes or sudden stops in heavy traffic conditions. No citations or arrests have been reported at this time.
We extend our thoughts to the individuals injured in this crash and hope for a smooth and complete recovery.
Highway Connector Crashes in San Francisco
Multi-vehicle collisions on connector ramps and merging zones—like the southbound US-101 interchange with I-280—can lead to complex injury scenarios, high-speed impacts, and severe backups. These interchanges are especially prone to crashes due to fluctuating speeds, merging traffic, and limited escape paths when congestion hits.
In urban freeway systems like San Francisco’s, connector areas often involve split-second decisions between multiple lane options. When visibility is compromised or speeds fluctuate suddenly, rear-end or side-swipe collisions are common. As seen in this incident, even moderate impacts involving SUVs can create situations with multiple lanes blocked and medical response needed.
For those involved in freeway crashes, especially multi-vehicle ones, the recovery process often extends beyond the scene. Dealing with injuries, car repairs, insurance communication, and traffic citations can be overwhelming. Timely medical attention and accurate documentation are critical steps toward both healing and accountability.
