San Francisco, CA (August 20, 2025) – A multi-vehicle collision Tuesday morning on northbound U.S. Highway 101 near the Interstate 280 split caused significant traffic delays and resulted in at least one vehicle deploying airbags, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred just after 9:15 a.m. and involved three vehicles, including a large SUV and a dark gray sedan. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene to assess injuries and manage traffic flow in the impacted lanes. While the full extent of injuries has not yet been confirmed, the activation of airbags indicates the force of the crash was substantial enough to raise safety concerns.
Traffic along northbound US-101 was heavily backed up during the morning commute as first responders worked to clear the scene. All vehicles were eventually moved from active lanes, but residual delays extended into late morning.
CHP officers remained at the scene to conduct an investigation into the cause of the crash. No details have yet been released regarding citations, impairment, or weather or road conditions at the time of the incident.
We extend our thoughts to all individuals involved and wish those injured a speedy and complete recovery.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes on US-101 in the Bay Area
The San Francisco section of U.S. Highway 101 is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in Northern California, particularly around the I-280 split, where complex merging patterns and dense traffic volumes significantly raise the risk of multi-vehicle crashes.
Three-vehicle collisions like Tuesday’s often occur during merging, lane changes, or sudden braking in congested conditions. While large SUVs and sedans offer differing levels of crash protection, all drivers are susceptible to serious injury in high-speed or chain-reaction events.
The deployment of airbags, while crucial for reducing injury severity, typically signals a moderate to high-impact collision and should be followed by thorough medical evaluation—even if no injuries are immediately apparent.
Delays caused by such incidents also pose secondary risks, including additional collisions and reduced emergency access, which is why CHP and Caltrans work quickly to clear scenes along US-101 and other Bay Area freeways.
If you or someone you love was injured in a freeway crash involving multiple vehicles, it’s important to seek care promptly and understand your rights regarding compensation and recovery.
