San Jose, CA (May 17, 2025) – Medics and fire crews worked to assist victims early Saturday morning after a fatal motorcycle crash on US-101 northbound, just south of the I-280 interchange. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received initial reports around 1:53 a.m. and arrived shortly after to find a tragic scene involving multiple vehicles and a severely injured motorcyclist.
According to CHP incident details, the crash involved a motorcycle and a white Cadillac sedan. Preliminary information suggests the motorcyclist was reportedly assisting with refueling when the Cadillac struck him on the right-hand shoulder. A witness stated the rider was laying in the slow lane with major head trauma when emergency personnel arrived. Despite life-saving efforts, the rider’s injuries were fatal.
Both vehicles sustained significant damage. The motorcycle was located approximately 30 feet off the roadway, and the Cadillac had major front-end damage and was found on the right shoulder. Evidence tows were coordinated to preserve details for the ongoing investigation.
The crash temporarily blocked multiple lanes and led to delays along US-101 NB. CHP and local fire crews worked through the early morning hours to secure the scene and reopen the highway.
Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Motorcycle Fatalities on California Highways
Motorcycle crashes remain among the most dangerous types of collisions on California freeways. The incident on US-101 near I-280 highlights the unique risks faced by riders—even when stopped on the shoulder. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), California consistently ranks among the highest in motorcycle fatalities, with many of these incidents involving collisions with passenger vehicles.
Shoulder-related incidents, like the one in this crash, are particularly hazardous as drivers often fail to recognize or give space to disabled vehicles or individuals in distress. The combination of high-speed travel and inattentiveness is especially deadly for motorcyclists, who lack the protection afforded to occupants of larger vehicles.
Drivers are urged to stay alert and slow down when approaching stopped vehicles or pedestrians on highway shoulders. Motorcycle riders are encouraged to use reflective gear, hazard lighting, and seek assistance in well-lit, visible areas whenever possible.
