San Jose, CA (August 5, 2025) – A three-vehicle collision resulted in injuries Tuesday afternoon along southbound Interstate 280 just north of the Lawrence Expressway offramp in San Jose.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:03 p.m., involving a blue Subaru sedan, a gray Honda sedan, and a white Mini Cooper. According to information from the California Highway Patrol, the Subaru and Honda came to rest along the right-hand shoulder, while the Mini Cooper was left blocking a traffic lane. Emergency crews responded quickly, and the crash was classified as an 1181, indicating at least one person sustained moderate injuries.
Paramedics were dispatched to assess the injured parties, and fire crews helped secure the scene by moving vehicles to the side of the freeway to allow traffic to continue flowing. At least two vehicles required towing, and a rotation tow was requested for the Subaru.
The crash led to temporary slowdowns along I-280 southbound, though all lanes were eventually cleared. An investigation is ongoing to determine whether speed, unsafe lane changes, or distracted driving may have contributed to the incident.
We wish those injured a smooth and full recovery.
Freeway Crash Risks in the Bay Area
High-speed corridors like I-280 are vital to Silicon Valley commuters, but they also pose consistent risks—especially near complex interchanges like the Lawrence Expressway. Multi-vehicle collisions in these zones can escalate quickly due to lane changes, merging traffic, and the high density of daily vehicles.
In Tuesday’s crash, three vehicles were involved in a scenario that appears to include rear-end impacts and vehicles spread across active lanes and shoulders. Incidents like this demonstrate how freeway crashes can unfold in mere seconds, leaving little time for evasive action.
Even moderate-injury crashes can have far-reaching effects on victims. Common consequences include hospital stays, physical therapy, and financial burdens from missed work and vehicle repairs. Emotional recovery, too, is often overlooked, yet remains critical in the weeks following a traumatic event.
San Jose and the greater Bay Area continue to push for safety enhancements on I-280 and other high-volume freeways through increased patrol presence, updated signage, and public awareness campaigns. Still, it’s the vigilance of individual drivers that makes the most immediate difference.
