San Jose, CA (September 4, 2025) – A woman has died from injuries she sustained in a rare but tragic incident involving a bicyclist suspected of being under the influence of a controlled substance. The collision occurred on the evening of August 27 in East San Jose, and authorities confirmed her passing on Tuesday, September 2.
According to San Jose police, the crash took place at approximately 7:15 p.m. near the intersection of Ocala Avenue and Berona Way, close to Hillview Park. A man riding a 16-speed Centurion road bicycle was traveling westbound in the bike lane on Ocala Avenue when he struck the woman from behind. She was walking or jogging in the same direction within the bicycle lane.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and provided immediate care. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. While doctors initially stabilized her condition, her injuries ultimately proved fatal.
The bicyclist remained at the scene and cooperated with police. He was arrested shortly thereafter and booked into Santa Clara County Jail. Authorities charged him with DUI on a bicycle causing injury and being under the influence of a controlled substance. His name has not been released publicly.
The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office has taken responsibility for confirming the victim’s identity and notifying her family.
This tragic incident marks the 23rd traffic fatality in San Jose in 2025, a figure that, while lower than the 35 deaths reported at the same time last year, remains a sobering reminder of the ongoing safety challenges on city streets.
Our hearts go out to the victim’s loved ones, and we extend our deepest condolences during this incredibly difficult time.
Impaired Cycling and Shared Pathway Dangers in San Jose
While traffic safety discussions often focus on motor vehicles, incidents like this highlight a lesser-known but equally critical risk: bicycle collisions involving pedestrians, especially when impaired operation is involved.
San Jose’s extensive network of bike lanes is designed to offer safer travel for cyclists and reduce congestion. However, shared-use corridors also bring increased risk when users are impaired or inattentive. In this case, a pedestrian walking in the same lane as the bicyclist was struck from behind—a type of crash typically associated with limited visibility, reduced reaction time, or impaired decision-making.
California law classifies riding a bicycle under the influence of drugs or alcohol as a criminal offense. While such cases are less common than vehicle DUI incidents, they carry many of the same dangers—particularly on narrow lanes where space is shared with walkers or joggers. This collision on Ocala Avenue is a devastating example of how impaired cycling can lead to fatal consequences.
Areas like Hillview Park and Ocala Ave often attract foot traffic in the early evening, as residents walk pets, exercise, or commute by foot. Many parts of San Jose, particularly the East Side, lack separated pedestrian pathways. As a result, joggers and walkers may use bicycle lanes out of necessity. When cyclists ride at speed—and especially while under the influence—these environments become hazardous for all users.
Law enforcement agencies and community safety programs continue to push education around the risks of impaired cycling. Still, more can be done through enforcement, infrastructure design, and public outreach to prevent tragic outcomes like this one.
