San Mateo County, CA (September 9, 2025) – A California Highway Patrol officer was injured Monday afternoon in a traffic collision involving a Tesla and a CHP motorcycle on Interstate 280, just south of Alpine Road. The incident occurred around 2:15 p.m. on September 8 and is currently under investigation.
According to CHP reports, the officer was responding to a call regarding an electric leaf blower obstructing traffic between two lanes, just south of Page Mill Road. To manage the situation safely, the officer initiated a traffic break and activated emergency lights while stationed on a department-issued motorcycle.
During the lane closure, a 2026 Tesla Model Y collided with the officer’s motorcycle, causing the officer to be ejected onto the roadway. Emergency crews responded promptly and provided care at the scene. The officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was later transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
The driver of the Tesla remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Authorities are reviewing whether Tesla’s driver assistance system was engaged at the time of the crash, a factor that could influence the ongoing investigation.
Traffic was temporarily disrupted along this stretch of I-280 as law enforcement and emergency personnel conducted cleanup and scene documentation.
We extend our well wishes to the injured officer for a full and speedy recovery.
Motorcycle Collisions Involving Emergency Personnel in California
Crashes involving law enforcement officers—especially those operating motorcycles—underscore the heightened risks faced by first responders during routine traffic management. In this incident, a CHP officer was injured while conducting a safety-related lane break, emphasizing how even well-marked and protocol-driven operations can still result in harm due to unpredictable driver behavior or technology failures.
Motorcycle units within the California Highway Patrol are often used for rapid response and traffic enforcement, but they offer limited protection compared to enclosed vehicles. When collisions occur—particularly on high-speed corridors like I-280—the potential for injury is significant.
The involvement of a Tesla Model Y in this crash has also raised questions about the use of driver assistance systems. While these technologies can enhance safety in some situations, they are not autonomous and still require active driver supervision. If it is determined that such a system was in use at the time of the collision, it could influence liability considerations and lead to broader discussions around the use of semi-automated vehicles on public roadways.
For those injured in crashes involving emergency response operations, recovery often involves both physical rehabilitation and administrative complexity. Legal reviews, insurance procedures, and internal investigations can prolong the process and increase stress for the individuals involved.
