Highway Collisions and Safety Concerns in the Bay Area
US-101 is one of the busiest north–south highways in California, serving millions of drivers throughout the Bay Area. The corridor through San Rafael, especially near 3rd St, experiences consistent congestion due to a mix of commuter, commercial, and local traffic. As a result, this section of the highway sees frequent incidents, particularly during high-volume periods like weekend afternoons.
The California Office of Traffic Safety reports that Marin County has experienced an uptick in traffic-related injuries in recent years. Collisions on highways like US-101 are often linked to unsafe lane changes, speeding, and inattentive driving—especially near exits and merges where drivers navigate shifting traffic conditions.
To help prevent similar incidents, motorists are reminded to slow down in heavy traffic, allow extra space between vehicles, and stay vigilant for sudden stops or merging vehicles. Caltrans and CHP continue to monitor high-risk areas and promote safe driving through education and enforcement.
