Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Crashes in Rural Santa Cruz County
The hit-and-run collision on Bear Creek Rd brings attention to the dangers pedestrians face in more isolated parts of Santa Cruz County. Rural roadways, while often scenic, can present increased risk due to narrow shoulders, lack of lighting, and higher vehicle speeds. These factors become even more dangerous when drivers fail to stop after a collision.
California law (Vehicle Code 20001) requires all drivers involved in a crash resulting in injury or death to remain at the scene and render aid or provide information. Fleeing from the scene, as occurred here, is a felony offense and carries serious legal consequences once the driver is located.
For victims of pedestrian hit-and-runs, the path to recovery can be particularly challenging. Beyond physical injuries, there are emotional consequences tied to the trauma of being abandoned at the scene. Victims also face complications with medical expenses and insurance coverage, especially when the responsible party remains unidentified.
