Seminole County, FL (August 18, 2025) – A 25-year-old man from Winter Springs was killed in a hit-and-run crash Saturday night while riding his bicycle in a designated bike lane along US 17-92. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 9:46 PM and continues to investigate who was behind the wheel of the vehicle involved.
According to FHP, the bicyclist was traveling in the marked bike lane between the outside travel lane and the right-turn lane on US 17-92 when he was struck by a vehicle that entered the road from State Road 414. Rather than stopping to render aid, the driver fled northbound on US 17-92, leaving the victim fatally injured.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending next-of-kin notification.
Following an intensive investigation, troopers located the suspected vehicle—a 2016 BMW X6—and have taken it into evidence. While the vehicle has been recovered, officials have not yet identified the driver and are urging anyone with information about the crash to come forward.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this heartbreaking time.
Hit-and-Run Bicycle Fatalities and Road Safety in Central Florida
The loss of a young life on Seminole County roads underscores the ongoing crisis facing Florida cyclists—particularly those navigating busy corridors like US 17-92. Despite using a designated bike lane, the 25-year-old victim was left with no chance when struck by a driver who failed to stop or take responsibility.
Florida law mandates that drivers must remain at the scene of any crash resulting in injury or death. Fleeing the scene not only violates the law but also robs victims of the immediate aid that could potentially save lives. In this case, the driver’s decision to flee left the cyclist to die alone on the roadway—a heartbreaking and inexcusable act.
Hit-and-run crashes involving cyclists are tragically common in Florida, a state that consistently ranks among the most dangerous for bicycle traffic. High-speed arterial roads like US 17-92 pose additional risks due to merging lanes, driver distractions, and reduced visibility at night. Even well-marked bike lanes cannot guarantee safety when drivers are negligent or reckless.
The discovery of the 2016 BMW X6 marks a significant step in the investigation, and FHP continues to seek tips to identify the person responsible. Community members who saw anything near US 17-92 and SR 414 around 9:45 PM Saturday night are encouraged to contact Florida Highway Patrol.
