Sheboygan Falls, WI (August 8, 2025) – A Thursday morning series of crashes on State Highway 23 left multiple people injured, including two with life-threatening and serious injuries, after an illegal U-turn set off a chain reaction in dense fog. The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office reported the first crash happened around 7:30 a.m. near Sunset Rd when a 79-year-old Sheboygan woman turned in front of a 19-year-old eastbound driver.
The collision triggered a chain reaction involving five additional vehicles. A 22-year-old man from Plymouth suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital, while a 37-year-old Glenbeulah woman was hospitalized with serious injuries. Her two juvenile passengers were also taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.
In the moments that followed, two more crashes occurred in the area. One crash just west of the original scene involved multiple vehicles but no reported injuries. Shortly after, another collision east of Bridgewood Rd involved eight vehicles and injured two additional people. Authorities say visibility at the time was less than a tenth of a mile, and drivers reported struggling to see more than a few feet ahead.
The sheriff’s office stressed the importance of using headlights and reducing speed during hazardous weather conditions. The 79-year-old driver will be cited for failure to yield causing injury. All incidents remain under investigation.
Car Accidents in Wisconsin
Fog-related crashes, such as the sequence on State Hwy 23 in Sheboygan Falls, highlight how quickly unsafe weather can turn dangerous. Low visibility limits reaction time, making it harder for drivers to see hazards, gauge distances, or respond to slowing traffic. In Wisconsin, chain-reaction crashes are common in foggy, icy, or snowy conditions, particularly on highways where speeds are higher and traffic is dense.
Driving in fog requires reducing speed well below the limit, increasing following distance, and always using headlights—never high beams, which can reflect off the moisture in the air and further reduce visibility. Remaining alert to brake lights ahead and avoiding sudden lane changes are critical to preventing pileups.
For crash victims, recovery may involve lengthy hospital stays, rehabilitation, and financial stress from medical bills and lost wages.
