Silver Spring, MD (May 20, 2025) – A crash involving a school bus carrying more than 20 children and a passenger vehicle left 12 people injured Tuesday morning in Silver Spring. The collision occurred shortly before 7:15 a.m. near the intersection of Norwood Rd and New Hampshire Ave, according to Montgomery County Police spokesperson Cassandra Tressler.
Among those injured were 10 children riding the bus, the bus driver, and the driver of the other vehicle involved. All were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Thankfully, none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
Both vehicles remained at the scene following the crash, and no individuals were reported to be trapped. Emergency crews from Montgomery County Fire and EMS responded promptly, ensuring rapid medical assessment and traffic control during the busy morning commute.
Officials have not disclosed the ages of the injured children or which school or school system the bus was affiliated with. It is also unclear whether the school bus was privately operated or part of Montgomery County Public Schools. Investigators are actively reviewing the crash to determine the cause, which remains unknown at this time.
We extend our thoughts to the students, drivers, and families affected, and we hope for a smooth and swift recovery for all those injured.
School Bus Collisions in Maryland
Crashes involving school buses are especially alarming due to the presence of child passengers and the potential for multi-person injuries. Tuesday’s incident in Silver Spring emphasizes the importance of traffic safety in areas where school transportation intersects with public roadways.
While school buses are designed with reinforced structures and specialized seating to protect children during collisions, passengers can still be injured by sudden jolts, seatbelt pressure, or side impacts. Even non-life-threatening injuries, particularly in children, require careful medical evaluation and monitoring.
Bus drivers and other motorists share a significant responsibility to exercise heightened caution near schools, during pickup and drop-off hours, and when traveling on routes frequented by buses. Investigations into these crashes often focus on right-of-way violations, distracted driving, speed, and road conditions.
For families, the emotional distress of having a child injured in a bus crash can be significant—adding to the burden of navigating hospital visits, insurance processes, and missed school or work.
If your child has been injured in a school bus crash or if you’ve been involved in such an incident, it’s important to seek support to manage both the medical and logistical challenges ahead.
