Sinton, TX (September 23, 2025) – A tragic multi-vehicle crash on State Highway 188 near Joey Dr claimed the life of one woman and left three others injured. The incident, which involved three vehicles, occurred at approximately 5:54 p.m. and prompted an extensive emergency response.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 62-year-old Edith Trotman of Sinton was driving a 2016 Nissan Versa westbound when her vehicle unexpectedly crossed into the eastbound lanes. The Versa initially collided with a 2014 Honda CRV driven by 54-year-old Sheryl Sczech of Spring Branch, who was traveling with 23-year-old passenger Lea Dujardin of New Braunfels.
After the initial impact, Trotman’s vehicle continued in the eastbound lane and crashed head-on into a 2016 Nissan Frontier driven by 65-year-old Joel Icenhour of Fulton.
Emergency responders from the surrounding area arrived promptly to treat those injured. Sczech, Dujardin, and Icenhour were transported to Christus Spohn Shoreline Hospital for treatment. Tragically, Trotman was pronounced dead at the scene by Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Judge Dupnik.
State Highway 188 was partially closed while DPS Highway Patrol troopers from the Refugio office conducted their investigation. The cause of the crash remains under review.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Edith Trotman, and we hope for a full recovery for all those injured.
Multi-Vehicle Collisions in Texas
This devastating three-vehicle crash near Joey Dr in San Patricio County underscores the deadly consequences that can arise from sudden lane departures on high-speed rural highways like SH-188. Unlike urban collisions, crashes on regional state highways often involve greater force due to higher speeds and limited room for evasive action.
When a vehicle crosses into oncoming traffic—as seen in this incident—the resulting chain of collisions can impact multiple parties, increasing the risk of serious injury or death. In this case, not only did one life tragically end, but three others were rushed to the hospital, highlighting the widespread effects of a single driver’s trajectory change.
Rural corridors such as the stretch between Sinton and Refugio are frequently traveled by local residents and commercial drivers alike. Despite relatively lower traffic volumes, these roads often lack dividers or shoulders wide enough to absorb abrupt lane departures, making them especially dangerous in head-on collision scenarios.
This crash also raises awareness about the importance of defensive driving and the need for consistent vehicle maintenance and alertness, particularly for older drivers who may experience health events or fatigue while on the road.
For families affected by fatal or serious injury crashes, the aftermath can be overwhelming. Medical bills, loss of income, emotional trauma, and the suddenness of a tragic loss require careful support and guidance. Community resources, hospital staff, and legal options all play a role in navigating the recovery process.
