South Fulton, GA (September 19, 2025) – A South Fulton police officer was seriously injured Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle while assisting motorists on Cascade Rd. The crash occurred just after 7:00 a.m. as the officer was responding to an earlier accident in the area.
Authorities identified the injured officer as Cpl. Cornelius Wood. According to a spokesperson for the department, Wood had been helping individuals involved in the prior collision when he was hit by a passing vehicle. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. His current condition has not yet been updated.
The driver who struck the officer remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Officials have not confirmed whether any charges will follow as the investigation continues.
The South Fulton Police Department has asked the community to keep Cpl. Wood in their thoughts as he undergoes treatment.
Roadside Crashes Involving First Responders in Georgia
Thursday’s incident on Cascade Rd highlights the serious risks faced by police officers and first responders who work roadside in dangerous traffic conditions. Despite the presence of flashing lights and emergency vehicles, drivers sometimes fail to reduce speed or shift lanes, creating life-threatening hazards for those on foot.
In Georgia, the “Move Over Law” requires drivers to move over a lane or slow significantly when approaching emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road. Unfortunately, crashes like this one demonstrate that compliance is not universal. Officers such as Cpl. Wood put themselves in harm’s way to keep others safe, and the consequences of driver inattention or failure to yield can be devastating.
Busy corridors like Cascade Rd in South Fulton see heavy commuter traffic, particularly during morning hours, which increases the likelihood of secondary accidents at crash scenes. For this reason, roadside safety remains a major focus for both law enforcement and transportation officials.
When officers or emergency workers are struck, the impact extends beyond the individual—it reverberates through the community and department. Supporting victims and ensuring accountability are vital steps toward preventing future tragedies.
