South Sacramento, CA (May 13, 2025) – A tragic pedestrian-involved collision claimed one life early Tuesday morning on the southbound side of Interstate 5 just south of Elk Grove Blvd, prompting a major emergency response and a full SigAlert closure.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:13 a.m., when a blue Toyota Tundra struck a pedestrian in the travel lanes. Authorities from the California Highway Patrol South Sacramento Division responded within minutes and confirmed the fatality shortly after arrival. The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was notified at 1:25 a.m., and efforts to manage traffic and secure the scene quickly followed.
A full SigAlert was issued at 1:34 a.m., closing all southbound lanes of I-5 at Elk Grove Blvd. CHP officers later directed traffic to exit at Elk Grove Blvd while emergency crews conducted their investigation. By approximately 2:09 a.m., an update indicated that two of the four lanes (#3 and #4) had reopened, allowing limited flow through the area. The roadway was declared fully reopened just before 3:00 a.m.
Details regarding the identity of the pedestrian have not been released, and the cause of the incident remains under active investigation. Authorities are working to determine how the individual came to be in the roadway at that hour. No further information about the driver has been disclosed at this time.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim.
Pedestrian Accidents in California
Pedestrian fatalities on California highways continue to raise alarm across the state, particularly in areas like South Sacramento, where high-speed corridors such as I-5 intersect with urban expansion zones. Crashes like the one early Tuesday morning underscore the vulnerability of pedestrians near freeway systems, where limited visibility and high vehicle speeds combine with narrow shoulders and minimal pedestrian infrastructure.
I-5 near Elk Grove Blvd is a heavily traveled route connecting commuters between Sacramento and the surrounding suburbs. Though it is not typically pedestrian-accessible, instances of individuals on the freeway occur due to stalled vehicles, homelessness, or disorientation. In such cases, the consequences are often fatal, as seen in this morning’s crash.
Drivers are urged to remain vigilant and slow down when approaching emergency activity. California law requires motorists to “Move Over or Slow Down” when passing first responders or tow trucks—especially in high-risk areas like freeway shoulders or blocked lanes.
Pedestrian fatalities often lead to complex investigations involving vehicle data, traffic cameras, and witness accounts. These cases can leave families grieving with few immediate answers, and support during this time is essential.
