Sparta, NY (September 12, 2025) – An 89-year-old woman, Isabell Erwin, was found dead inside her home in Sparta after a devastating house fire Thursday morning. The fire was ignited by a crash involving two dump trucks on Culbertson Road, just before 8 a.m. The incident is still under investigation by the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the two dump trucks were traveling downhill on Culbertson Road when they collided after being unable to stop. One of the trucks smashed into the home, causing a fire that engulfed the structure. Firefighters and emergency responders from 14 different agencies quickly arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze. The drivers of the dump trucks were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but tragically, Isabell Erwin did not survive.
While the fire destroyed the home, deputies confirmed that other residents were inside at the time but managed to escape safely. The exact number of people inside the house is unclear, but the Red Cross is offering assistance to those affected.
In a follow-up statement, deputies revealed that one of the trucks involved in the crash experienced a mechanical failure, causing it to lose its brakes while traveling down Harter Road. Both trucks were hauling approximately 20 tons of asphalt from Honeoye Falls to North Dansville at the time of the crash.
The investigation into the cause of the crash and the fire is ongoing. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Isabell Erwin, and we extend our sympathies to everyone impacted by this tragic incident.
