Deadly Roadside Hazards in Spartanburg County
Union St near Cedar Springs Rd is a key corridor in Spartanburg, serving both residential neighborhoods and commuter routes. Like many roadways that curve through mixed-use areas, it presents challenges such as shifting lanes, narrow shoulders, and fixed roadside objects like barriers or utility poles.
Crashes involving a vehicle leaving the roadway often occur at night when visibility is reduced and reaction times are slowed. These incidents can stem from overcorrection, distraction, fatigue, or speed. The presence of a solid barrier—as in this case—can turn a simple roadway departure into a life-threatening collision.
To reduce these risks, drivers are encouraged to remain alert, obey posted speed limits, and avoid driving while fatigued or distracted. Nighttime driving requires heightened caution, particularly in areas with roadside obstacles and limited recovery space.
