St. Landry Parish, LA (August 4, 2025) – A deadly head-on collision Saturday afternoon in Church Point claimed the life of a local man and left another driver seriously injured. Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to the scene shortly after 2:00 p.m. on August 2 along Louisiana Highway 358 near its junction with LA Highway 357.
According to the initial investigation, 38-year-old Alex Chavis of Church Point was traveling westbound in a 2017 Kia Optima when his vehicle crossed the centerline for unknown reasons. The Kia collided head-on with a 2005 Dodge Ram traveling east in the opposite lane.
Chavis, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Dodge, who was properly restrained, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Their identity has not yet been released.
As standard procedure, toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis. The crash remains under active investigation by Louisiana State Police.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Alex Chavis and wish the injured driver a full recovery.
Seatbelt Use and Head-On Collisions in Rural Louisiana
Fatal head-on crashes—like the one that occurred Saturday on LA-358—are among the most devastating roadway events, particularly on narrow, undivided highways that crisscross rural areas such as St. Landry Parish. With no physical barriers between opposing lanes, even a brief moment of distraction or overcorrection can lead to catastrophic consequences.
In this case, the failure to wear a seatbelt proved deadly. Unrestrained occupants are far more likely to suffer fatal injuries in head-on impacts due to the forceful forward momentum and lack of restraint protection. Louisiana State Police consistently emphasize that seatbelt use remains one of the most effective tools in preventing roadway fatalities.
The injured driver of the Dodge Ram, who was wearing a seatbelt, survived the collision despite suffering serious injuries—underscoring the life-saving power of proper restraint. Meanwhile, investigators will look into whether fatigue, distraction, mechanical failure, or impairment played a role in Chavis crossing the centerline.
For families affected by fatal crashes, the aftermath is often filled with grief, confusion, and the need for answers. Medical bills, legal inquiries, and insurance disputes can add to the burden during an already overwhelming time.
