St. Louis, MO (April 23, 2025) – A devastating collision on I-270 Northbound at the I-64 interchange Tuesday afternoon resulted in the death of one man and left two others seriously injured. The crash, reported at approximately 1:45 p.m., drew a comprehensive emergency response, including the Missouri State Highway Patrol and specialized crash investigators.
According to the official report from Trooper C. Gates and MICU Team 2 Investigators Cpl. M. Frigy and Trooper A. Borgic, the driver of a 2000 Ford Explorer lost control of the vehicle and rear-ended a 1997 Honda CR-V. The impact set off a catastrophic chain reaction: the Explorer veered off the roadway and struck a pole, while the CR-V also left the road, overturned, and landed violently on the ground.
The driver of the Explorer, a 69-year-old man from St. Charles, MO, was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by West County Fire personnel at 2:03 p.m. His body was later transported to the St. Louis County Morgue by the Medical Examiner’s Office.
In the Honda CR-V, the 68-year-old female driver from Mapaville, MO, and a 69-year-old male passenger from Festus, MO, both sustained serious injuries. They were transported by West County EMS to Mercy Hospital St. Louis for emergency treatment. Both vehicles were totaled in the collision and towed from the scene by McNamara’s.
Troopers from Troop C, alongside MSGT D. Bilyeu and Trooper T. O’Sullivan, provided scene support and are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, which occurred in one of the region’s busiest interchange zones.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and wish a full recovery to those injured.
Fatal Car Accidents in Missouri
High-speed collisions on major interstates like I-270 can quickly turn deadly, as tragically demonstrated in Tuesday’s crash near the I-64 interchange. This heavily trafficked area in St. Louis County is a known bottleneck for congestion, particularly during mid-day and evening hours, when merging vehicles and variable speeds frequently pose risks.
The fatal crash involved a northbound Ford Explorer that, for reasons still under investigation, lost control and collided with the rear of a slower-moving Honda CR-V. In such scenarios, even momentary lapses in driver attention or vehicle handling can have irreversible consequences, particularly at interstate speeds.
Missouri traffic data consistently points to lack of seatbelt use as a major factor in fatal crashes involving older drivers. Despite numerous public safety campaigns, some drivers still neglect basic protective measures. In this crash, the male driver of the Explorer was unrestrained and suffered fatal injuries, while the seriously injured occupants of the CR-V were belted in.
This incident also reflects the unique hazards present at major interchanges, where navigation demands, sudden speed adjustments, and lane changes increase the risk of rear-end collisions. The violent aftermath—with both vehicles going off-road and the CR-V overturning—illustrates how quickly a high-impact collision can evolve beyond the initial contact.
For surviving victims, the road to recovery may involve prolonged medical care, emotional trauma, and the navigation of insurance and legal complexities. Accessing timely and knowledgeable support is crucial for those affected.
If you or a loved one has been impacted by a serious highway accident, it’s important to seek assistance in understanding your rights and resources.
