Ste. Genevieve, MO – Injury Crash on I-55 at MO-Y Involving Semi and Passenger Car

August 27, 2025

Ste. Genevieve, MO (August 27, 2025) – Emergency medical services responded swiftly after a two-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 55 at MO-Y left multiple individuals with injuries on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:57 PM and involved a 2015 Kia Optima and a 2020 Peterbilt semi-truck. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash took place when the Kia driver failed to stop at a posted stop sign and collided with the eastbound Peterbilt, striking it on the driver’s side.

Emergency responders from Ste. Genevieve County were quick to the scene, where they provided immediate assistance to those injured. The 66-year-old woman driving the Kia, as well as her 97-year-old female passenger, both sustained minor injuries. Paramedics transported them to Mercy Hospital Jefferson for further evaluation and care. Both individuals were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The semi-truck, driven by a 53-year-old man from Fredricktown, MO, sustained only minor damage and was driven away from the scene. In contrast, the Kia suffered extensive damage and was towed from the location by Ste. Genevieve County Towing. Authorities remained on site to investigate the crash, assisted by an additional trooper.

As of now, the Missouri State Highway Patrol continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. We extend our well wishes for a swift recovery to those injured in this collision.

Car Accidents in Missouri

Two-vehicle collisions involving passenger cars and commercial trucks continue to be a significant source of injury-related incidents on Missouri’s roadways. The crash on I-55 at MO-Y reflects a pattern where right-of-way violations—such as failing to stop at a stop sign—can have serious consequences, especially when larger vehicles like semi-trucks are involved.

Interstate 55, a major north-south corridor in eastern Missouri, frequently experiences heavy commercial traffic. Accidents at interchanges like MO-Y underscore the importance of heightened driver awareness, particularly at junctions where cross traffic and stop controls are present. In this recent crash, investigators confirmed that the driver of the Kia failed to yield, which ultimately resulted in the collision.

Incidents like this also highlight the vulnerability of older adults in traffic accidents. The involvement of a 97-year-old passenger calls attention to the increased medical risks and the importance of prompt emergency response. Fortunately, thanks to the coordinated efforts of Ste. Genevieve emergency crews, both victims were safely transported for medical care.

Education and community awareness play a vital role in reducing intersection-related collisions. Missouri drivers are reminded to always come to a complete stop at marked intersections and to proceed only when it is safe. Defensive driving near semi-trucks is also essential due to their limited visibility and longer stopping distances.

Recovering from a crash like the one on I-55 can take time and may involve both physical and emotional challenges. Medical treatment, insurance matters, and legal responsibilities can become overwhelming for injured victims and their families. Ensuring access to proper support and reliable resources is key during the aftermath.

If you or someone you care about was hurt in a crash in Missouri, understanding your rights and seeking professional guidance can help you move forward with confidence.
