Stephens County, TX (January 16, 2026) – A tragic boating accident claimed the life of one man and left another injured at Hubbard Creek Reservoir in Stephens County. The collision occurred just before 4:30 p.m., prompting an emergency response from local authorities.
According to the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office, 38-year-old James Cozart was operating a boat with 67-year-old Roger Cross as a passenger when the crash happened. Details remain limited, but officials confirmed that Cross drowned in the incident. Cozart managed to swim to safety and survived, though his current condition has not been disclosed.
The exact nature of what the boat may have struck or whether any mechanical factors played a role remains under investigation. Authorities have stated that alcohol is not believed to have been involved.
