Steuben County, IN (September 17, 2025) – A motorcycle rider suffered critical injuries on Tuesday night after being struck by a car at the intersection of CR 400 N and SR 127 in northern Steuben County. The crash occurred shortly after 10:00 p.m., prompting a swift response from local emergency personnel.
According to investigators, an 18-year-old driver had stopped at the intersection but reportedly failed to see an approaching motorcycle. As the driver attempted a left turn, the vehicle moved directly into the motorcycle’s path, causing a violent collision.
The 26-year-old motorcyclist from Coldwater, MI, was transported to a hospital in Fort Wayne with life-threatening injuries. Reports confirm that the driver of the car was uninjured. Preliminary findings suggest the driver may have been on their phone at the time of the crash, though the investigation is ongoing.
SR 127 was shut down for over 90 minutes as crews responded to the scene, conducted cleanup, and began collecting evidence.
Our thoughts are with the injured rider and their loved ones, and we hope for a full and swift recovery.
Motorcycle Collisions in Indiana
Motorcycle accidents like the one reported in Steuben County highlight the severe consequences riders can face—particularly in rural areas where visibility and awareness are critical. Left-turn crashes, where a driver pulls into the path of an oncoming motorcycle, are among the most common and deadly collision types for motorcyclists in the United States.
According to Indiana traffic data, distracted driving is a growing factor in intersection-related crashes. A momentary glance at a phone can result in permanent injuries or worse—especially when a motorcyclist is involved. Without the protection of a vehicle frame, motorcyclists are exposed to direct impact and often suffer traumatic injuries even at moderate speeds.
Drivers must remain alert and double-check for motorcycles before making any turning movements, particularly at uncontrolled or stop-sign intersections. Likewise, riders are encouraged to wear reflective gear, operate headlights at all times, and anticipate potential hazards in rural intersections.
