Stoddard County, MO (May 14, 2025) – A violent head-on crash along US 60 east of Dudley left four people injured Monday evening, including two children, after a vehicle crossed the center line and collided with oncoming traffic. The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. on May 12 and was investigated by Trooper W.L. Vanmatre of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
According to the crash report, a 2024 Hyundai Elantra driven by a 50-year-old woman from Penbrock, NC, was traveling westbound on US 60 when, for unknown reasons, it crossed the center line and struck a westbound 2023 Nissan Altima driven by a 25-year-old man from Poplar Bluff, MO. The impact sent both vehicles off the roadway, with the Elantra overturning and striking an embankment after becoming airborne.
The Elantra sustained total damage, and the Altima suffered extensive damage. Both vehicles were towed from the scene by Roberts Towing.
Injuries and Victim Details:
- A 12-year-old boy in the Elantra sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
- A 1-year-old girl in the vehicle suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to the same facility.
- A 43-year-old male occupant of the Elantra also suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center.
- The 50-year-old female driver sustained minor injuries and was also transported by ambulance.
The driver of the Nissan Altima was reportedly uninjured and was wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash. None of the occupants in the Elantra were reported to have been wearing safety restraints.
We extend our deepest concern to those injured in this devastating crash, especially the young children, and hope for a full and swift recovery.
Center Line Crossovers and Head-On Collisions in Missouri
Crashes where a vehicle crosses the centerline, such as the one that occurred on US 60 east of Dudley, are among the most dangerous types of roadway incidents. These collisions often occur at high speeds and can result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities—particularly when safety restraints are not used.
Rural highways like US 60 in Stoddard County present heightened risks due to limited median barriers and high-speed traffic flow. According to Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) data, center line crossover crashes account for a disproportionate share of serious injury and fatality accidents statewide.
The presence of children among the injured in this crash adds another layer of urgency to the discussion on child passenger safety and proper seat restraint use. Missouri law requires appropriate safety devices for all passengers, especially minors. In this case, failure to use restraints may have worsened the severity of injuries.
When families are affected by a crash of this magnitude, they face not only the physical and emotional consequences but also the financial burden of medical treatment, transportation, and potential long-term care.
