Stowe Prairie Twp, MN – Two Injured in Collision on US Hwy 71 at 450th St

September 9, 2025

Stowe Prairie Twp, MN (September 9, 2025) – Two people were injured on Monday night in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 71 in Todd County. The Minnesota State Patrol reports the collision occurred at approximately 10:26 p.m. near 450th St in Stowe Prairie Township.

According to investigators, both vehicles were traveling northbound on Highway 71 when a 2016 Ford F-150 attempted to pass a 2000 GMC Sierra. During the maneuver, the Ford F150 sideswiped the GMC, resulting in the crash.

Emergency responders from the Todd County Sheriff’s Office, Bertha Fire, and Bertha Ambulance provided medical assistance at the scene. Both drivers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Wadena Hospital for treatment.

The drivers were identified as a 17-year-old female from Bertha, operating the GMC Sierra, and 50-year-old Ivan David Reinke of Wadena, driving the Ford F150. Both were reported to have been wearing seat belts, and alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The roadway was dry at the time of the incident, and airbags in both vehicles did not deploy. Authorities continue to review the circumstances, though preliminary findings indicate improper passing contributed to the collision.

We extend our best wishes for a smooth recovery to the two drivers injured in this crash.

Rural Highway Accidents in Minnesota

Crashes on rural highways, like Monday night’s collision on US Hwy 71, highlight the risks drivers face in areas with fewer traffic control measures and higher travel speeds. Passing maneuvers, such as the one that caused this incident, are particularly dangerous on two-lane highways where visibility and timing are critical. Even a small misjudgment can lead to side-impact or head-on crashes, both of which are common on Minnesota’s rural roads.

Todd County has seen steady traffic along Highway 71, which serves as a major connector for residents commuting to nearby towns. Accidents in these areas often occur during evening hours when visibility is reduced and drivers may be fatigued. While both individuals in this case were fortunate to escape with non-life-threatening injuries, the outcome could have been far more severe.

Seat belt use, as demonstrated by both drivers in this crash, plays a critical role in reducing the severity of injuries. However, even with proper safety measures, victims often face lasting challenges, including medical treatment, time away from work, and the stress of dealing with insurance claims.
