Sumter Co, SC (September 18, 2025) – A tragic pedestrian crash claimed one life and left another injured Wednesday afternoon in Sumter County. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred around 12:10 PM along Broad St (U.S. 76), about a mile west of a nearby intersection.
Authorities said a 2017 GMC pickup truck was traveling east on Broad St when it struck two pedestrians who were walking in the same direction. One of the victims died at the scene, while the second was transported by EMS to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the pickup, who was alone in the vehicle, also sustained injuries and was hospitalized.
The Sumter County Coroner’s Office is working to confirm the identity of the pedestrian who lost their life. Troopers with SCHP are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision.
Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased victim, and we hope for a full and swift recovery for the injured pedestrian and driver.
Pedestrian Fatalities on South Carolina Roadways
The fatal crash on Broad St underscores the serious risks pedestrians face on South Carolina’s major roadways. U.S. 76 is a busy thoroughfare through Sumter County, carrying both local and through traffic. Pedestrians traveling along these stretches are particularly vulnerable, as traffic speeds and roadway design often provide little margin for error when vehicles and pedestrians share the same space.
According to state data, South Carolina consistently reports some of the highest pedestrian fatality rates in the nation. Many incidents occur along arterial roads outside of intersections—similar to Wednesday’s tragedy—where drivers may not expect to encounter pedestrians. In such areas, reduced shoulders, limited sidewalks, and high traffic volumes increase the danger.
When pedestrians are struck by large vehicles like pickup trucks, the outcomes are often devastating. The combination of size, weight, and speed can lead to catastrophic injuries, as seen in this case where one individual died at the scene. Survivors of these crashes often endure extensive medical care, rehabilitation, and long-term recovery challenges.
Community awareness and roadway improvements, including the addition of crosswalks, lighting, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, are vital steps toward reducing these tragedies. At the same time, drivers are reminded to stay alert and share the road responsibly, especially in areas where people may be walking along the shoulder.
