Winning Trials since 1979

Sumter County, FL (August 4, 2025) – A Sunday afternoon motorcycle crash on Interstate 75 claimed the life of an 84-year-old man from Carlisle, Ohio, and left his 80-year-old female passenger with serious injuries, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The incident occurred around 2:40 p.m. near the 306-mile marker.

Investigators say the man was riding a Honda Goldwing motorcycle southbound on I-75 when he attempted to exit the highway to enter a rest area. As he navigated the off-ramp, the motorcycle failed to manage a curve, left the roadway, and traveled into a drainage retention area. It then collided with an embankment.

Emergency medical teams pronounced the rider deceased at the scene. His passenger, an 80-year-old woman from Eaton, Ohio, sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and officials are continuing to investigate the contributing factors.

The names of the individuals involved have not yet been released pending family notification.

Our hearts go out to the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time.

Motorcycle Crashes in Florida

Florida’s highways are popular with motorcyclists from across the country, especially older riders traveling for leisure. However, crashes like the one on I-75 in Sumter County reveal how quickly a relaxing ride can turn tragic—even without another vehicle involved. The state’s long stretches of high-speed roadway, combined with unpredictable off-ramp designs, demand constant attention and strong situational awareness from all drivers.

In this case, the failure to navigate a curve while exiting a rest area was enough to result in a fatal accident. It’s a sobering reminder that exit ramps and roadside terrain can be especially dangerous for motorcycles, which are less forgiving than cars in situations involving loss of control or road departure. Even experienced riders can be caught off guard by abrupt curves or uneven surfaces.

Florida continues to see a high number of motorcycle fatalities each year, with older riders over age 60 representing a growing portion of those involved. Physical vulnerability increases with age, making any crash more likely to result in serious or fatal injuries—even at relatively low speeds.

For surviving passengers and family members, the aftermath of such accidents can be overwhelming. In addition to emotional trauma, many face long recovery periods, unexpected hospital bills, and legal questions related to fault, roadway safety, or insurance coverage.

Understanding the risks involved in motorcycle travel—and knowing how to respond when a crash occurs—is essential for all riders and their families. Support from qualified professionals, access to resources, and timely information can provide much-needed clarity and comfort.
