Winning Trials since 1979

Sumter County, FL (August 6, 2025) – A tragic crash on Interstate 75 near Wildwood on Monday night left one teen dead and several others injured, following a high-speed collision involving a Dodge Charger that erupted in flames. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports that a 17-year-old male driver is now facing multiple felony charges after allegedly fleeing the scene.

The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of I-75 in Sumter County. According to investigators, the 17-year-old from Inverness was operating the Dodge Charger “at a high rate of speed” when he overtook slower vehicles and swerved to avoid a collision. The car left the roadway, struck a tree, and immediately caught fire.

Emergency crews responded quickly, rendering aid to all five occupants of the vehicle—each from Inverness—who suffered varying degrees of injuries. Sadly, a 16-year-old male passenger succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a nearby hospital. A 15-year-old suffered serious injuries, while the remaining passengers, ages 13 and 17, sustained minor injuries.

In a disturbing turn, the driver allegedly exited the burning vehicle, removed the license plate, and fled on foot. Law enforcement later located him hiding inside a chicken coop on 111th Lane, where he was taken into custody by FHP and Sumter County deputies. He now faces charges including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the teen who lost his life and wish strength and healing to all those affected by this devastating incident.

Teen Driving Risks and High-Speed Crashes in Florida

The deadly crash on I-75 serves as a tragic illustration of the dangers posed by high-speed driving and inexperience among teen drivers. Young motorists, particularly those under the age of 18, often face challenges in decision-making and risk awareness behind the wheel. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, teen drivers are far more likely to be involved in serious or fatal crashes—especially when traveling at high speeds or carrying multiple passengers.

In this Sumter County case, the combination of excessive speed, evasive maneuvers, and overloaded vehicle occupancy created a perfect storm that ended in tragedy. The loss of a 16-year-old passenger underscores how quickly poor driving decisions can lead to irreversible outcomes—not only for drivers, but for their peers and families.

Florida law restricts certain driving privileges for minors under the graduated driver licensing system, yet enforcement remains difficult once teens are on the road. The presence of a 13-year-old passenger also raises questions about seatbelt use and appropriate supervision for young riders.

Beyond the crash itself, the driver’s attempt to evade responsibility by removing the license plate and fleeing the scene reflects a devastating lack of awareness of the consequences such actions carry—not only morally, but legally. Vehicular homicide and hit-and-run with fatal injury are both serious felonies that can carry life-altering penalties under Florida law.

Families affected by teen-involved crashes face immense grief and uncertainty. Legal processes, medical expenses, and emotional trauma often follow such incidents, and navigating these challenges requires compassionate, informed support.
