Winning Trials since 1979

Sumter County, FL (August 5, 2025) – A devastating high-speed crash on Interstate 75 claimed the life of a 16-year-old boy and left several others injured Monday afternoon. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) confirmed the crash occurred around 2:53 p.m. on August 4, 2025, in the southbound lanes near Wildwood and has resulted in the arrest of a 17-year-old driver now facing multiple felony charges.

The driver, identified as Dylan Austin Richards of Inverness, was behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger reportedly traveling at a dangerously high rate of speed when the vehicle veered off the highway, struck a tree, and burst into flames. Witnesses told authorities that Richards removed the car’s license plate and fled on foot, leaving behind four injured teenage passengers in the burning wreckage.

Emergency personnel from FHP and the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office arrived quickly and began rescue and containment efforts. All four passengers—ages 13 to 17—were rushed to area hospitals. Sadly, a 16-year-old male succumbed to his injuries. The others sustained injuries ranging from minor to serious. Richards was later found hiding in a chicken coop on NW 111th Lane and taken into custody. He was treated for minor injuries before being booked on felony charges, including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.

The tragic circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation. Additional charges may follow as authorities continue to gather evidence.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the teen who lost his life and offer our sincere hopes for healing and recovery to the other young victims and their families.

Teen Driving Accidents in Florida

This heartbreaking crash highlights the very real dangers associated with reckless driving—especially when young, inexperienced drivers are behind the wheel. In Florida, teen drivers remain statistically more likely to engage in speeding, aggressive maneuvers, and unsafe behaviors due to a combination of inexperience and underdeveloped decision-making skills.

Monday’s incident on I-75 represents a worst-case scenario: a high-speed crash involving teens, a fiery impact, and a fatal outcome—all made worse by the driver’s decision to flee. According to state data, crashes involving drivers under the age of 20 account for a disproportionate share of serious injuries and fatalities on Florida’s roadways. Reckless behavior not only puts the driver at risk—it endangers everyone in the vehicle and others on the road.

This tragedy will have long-lasting effects on the victims, their families, and the broader Inverness and Sumter County communities. For those who survive such crashes, physical recovery is just the beginning. Survivors often face trauma, loss of mobility, financial strain, and emotional scars that can take years to process.

In fatal cases involving negligent or criminal driver behavior, families may seek legal avenues to pursue justice and obtain the support they need for funeral expenses, counseling, and other recovery resources. Understanding these options early is critical to ensuring the rights of victims and families are protected.
