Sumter County, SC (September 7, 2025) – A fatal hit-and-run collision claimed the life of one individual early Saturday morning in Sumter County, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The deadly crash occurred just after midnight on Broad St, approximately five miles west of the City of Sumter.
Emergency responders were called to the scene following reports of a serious crash involving a 2020 Honda moped and another, unidentified vehicle. Upon arrival, troopers and EMS crews discovered the moped operator had suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification by the Sumter County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities stated that both the moped and the second vehicle were traveling eastbound on Broad St when the unknown driver struck the moped from behind and then fled the scene without stopping to render aid or contact authorities. No identifying information about the hit-and-run vehicle has been released at this time.
South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident and is urging anyone with information to come forward. Master Trooper William Bennett confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing and that troopers are actively working to identify the driver responsible.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this incredibly difficult time.
Hit-and-Run Collisions in South Carolina
This tragic incident in Sumter County sheds light on the growing concern of hit-and-run collisions throughout South Carolina. Hit-and-run crashes are among the most devastating for victims and their families—not only because of the injuries involved but also due to the sheer disregard for human life shown by fleeing drivers.
Broad St, a well-traveled corridor on the outskirts of Sumter, has seen its share of traffic dangers. Moped and motorcycle operators face elevated risks on rural and semi-urban roads, particularly at night when visibility is reduced and driver attentiveness may wane. In this case, the rear-end nature of the collision suggests the moped rider may have had limited ability to avoid impact.
According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, hit-and-run crashes have increased across the state in recent years. Victims of these incidents are often left without immediate medical care, and law enforcement is left with the burden of tracking down drivers who attempt to avoid responsibility.
Losing a loved one to a hit-and-run collision is a unique kind of pain—one that combines grief with unanswered questions and an urgent need for justice. For families, it’s essential to know that support systems do exist. From victim advocacy programs to legal options for recovery, resources are available to help navigate the path forward.
This heartbreaking loss underscores the importance of public cooperation in identifying hit-and-run suspects. Even the smallest piece of information—such as a vehicle color, direction of travel, or surveillance footage—can make a difference in helping authorities bring closure to grieving families.
