Superior Twp, MI (May 13, 2025) – A tragic head-on collision late Monday night claimed the life of a 26-year-old man from Whitmore Lake after his vehicle struck a tractor-trailer while traveling the wrong way on M-14. The fatal crash occurred around 11:05 p.m. near Vorhies Road in Superior Township, northeast of Ann Arbor.
According to Michigan State Police, the man was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of M-14 when his vehicle collided directly with a tractor-trailer operated by a 25-year-old driver from Ontario. The impact of the collision was catastrophic, and the driver of the passenger vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver suffered minor injuries and was evaluated on-site.
Police are still investigating how the wrong-way driving began, including whether the man crossed the median or entered the highway incorrectly. Investigators suspect that alcohol and drugs may have been contributing factors, though toxicology results are pending.
The crash also caused the release of approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel, which required an environmental cleanup response by fire crews from both Superior and Ann Arbor Townships. Superior Township Fire Department Captain Jeff French reported that the scene was cleared by 2:30 a.m., though the freeway remained closed until about 5 a.m. due to the extensive cleanup and investigation.
Anyone with additional information regarding the incident is urged to contact the Michigan State Police.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life in this devastating crash.
Wrong-Way Crashes in Michigan
Wrong-way collisions, such as the one that occurred Monday night on M-14, are among the most deadly types of traffic accidents. These incidents frequently involve head-on impacts at highway speeds and often result in fatalities or severe trauma. In many cases, wrong-way crashes are linked to impaired driving, confusion, or intentional risk-taking.
Freeway interchanges and on-ramps can be confusing, especially at night or in low-visibility conditions, and wrong-way driving incidents typically occur in the late-night or early-morning hours, when alcohol and drug impairment are more likely. Tragically, many of these crashes result in the death of the wrong-way driver, as seen in this Superior Township incident.
The aftermath of such collisions affects more than the individuals directly involved—it deeply impacts families, first responders, and local communities. Clean-up efforts, road closures, and trauma to those who witnessed or survived the crash are long-lasting consequences.
While prevention continues to be a focus for transportation authorities, through improved signage, road design, and impaired driving campaigns, these incidents serve as stark reminders of the dangers of impaired and inattentive driving.
If someone you know has been affected by a wrong-way crash, it’s essential to connect with support services for emotional, legal, and medical guidance.
