Sylmar, CA (September 9, 2025) – A man lost his life Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle while walking on the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway near Yarnell St, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The tragic incident occurred around 7:20 p.m., when witnesses reported seeing a male pedestrian walking within the active traffic lanes of the freeway. Moments later, he was struck by a passing vehicle.
Emergency personnel from the Los Angeles Fire Department and CHP responded to the scene and attempted life-saving efforts, but the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver involved remained at the location and cooperated with investigators. Authorities closed several westbound lanes during the investigation, which caused significant delays into the evening hours.
The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. CHP has not indicated why the pedestrian was in the roadway and continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Fatalities on California Freeways
Pedestrian fatalities along high-speed roadways such as the 210 Freeway are particularly distressing due to the inherently dangerous nature of freeway environments. These roads are designed for fast-moving vehicles and are not equipped to accommodate pedestrians under any normal circumstances.
In cases like this one in Sylmar, questions often arise as to why an individual was on the freeway in the first place. It’s not uncommon for such situations to involve disoriented individuals, emergencies, or mechanical issues, though each case is unique and must be carefully investigated.
California continues to lead the nation in pedestrian-related fatalities, and incidents involving freeway crossings or pedestrian presence on interstates often end in tragedy. Vehicles traveling at freeway speeds rarely have the ability to stop in time when an unexpected obstacle appears—especially a pedestrian.
Drivers who are involved in these types of accidents are often traumatized as well, particularly when the collision was unavoidable. CHP will assess whether speed, lighting, or other environmental factors contributed to the outcome, but the mere presence of a pedestrian in active lanes presents a serious and often fatal risk.
For the families of victims, the grief that follows such a sudden and violent loss is profound. Legal, medical, and psychological support may be necessary to begin healing and to understand any rights they may have under California law—particularly if unsafe road conditions or third-party factors contributed to the tragedy.
