Taconite, MN – Injuries in Motorcycle Accident on Hwy 169 Near Gibbs Park Rd

July 7, 2025

Taconite, MN (July 7, 2025) – A serious multi-vehicle crash occurred just after noon Sunday on southbound Highway 169 at milepost 316, resulting in life-threatening injuries to a motorcyclist. The collision involved a 2010 GMC Sierra, a 2013 Ford F150, and a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle. The incident unfolded around 12:19 p.m. as traffic slowed near Gibbs Park Rd in Itasca County.

Medics and fire crews worked to assist those suffering from injuries after the collision. The driver of the Harley Davidson, identified as 57-year-old Jerry Wayne Music of Taconite, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported by air to North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale for emergency treatment. Authorities confirmed no other injuries were reported among the drivers or passengers of the other vehicles.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash began when an unknown vehicle slowed to make a left turn onto Gibbs Park Rd. A GMC Sierra, hauling a boat, stopped behind that vehicle. As traffic backed up, a Ford F150 pulled onto the shoulder to avoid rear-ending the Sierra. The Harley Davidson rider, also heading southbound, entered the slowdown area and collided with both the boat trailer and the Ford pickup.

Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including the Itasca County Sheriff’s Office, Taconite and Greenway Fire Departments, Nashwauk Ambulance, and North Memorial Air Care. Road conditions at the time were dry, and no alcohol was involved.

Our thoughts are with Mr. Music and his family, and we hope for his full recovery following this tragic incident.

Motorcycle Safety and Slowdown Hazards in Minnesota

Crashes involving motorcycles, especially in traffic slowdowns, often result in severe or life-threatening injuries. Motorcyclists lack the protective features of enclosed vehicles, making rear-end or side-impact crashes particularly dangerous. The incident on Highway 169 near Gibbs Park Rd underscores the vulnerability of motorcyclists in complex traffic situations.

Minnesota continues to see a notable number of serious motorcycle accidents during summer months, especially in scenic or rural areas like Itasca County. According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, motorcycle crashes have been increasing, with many involving riders over the age of 50—highlighting the importance of proper gear and situational awareness regardless of experience level.

Motorcyclists should remain especially alert in areas where visibility may be limited due to other vehicles, and when approaching traffic backups or turning vehicles. Slowing down, maintaining extended following distances, and wearing helmets—even in states without mandatory helmet laws—can significantly reduce the severity of injuries.

For victims of motorcycle crashes, seeking immediate medical care and legal advice is critical. When another vehicle’s actions or roadway circumstances contribute to an accident, injured parties may be eligible for compensation to help cover hospital bills, ongoing treatment, and other losses.
