Talladega County, AL (July 8, 2025) – A tragic three-vehicle collision on Interstate 20 early Sunday morning claimed the life of a 74-year-old woman from Summerville, South Carolina, and left one other individual injured. The fatal crash occurred at approximately 7:23 a.m. near mile marker 207, according to Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) officials.
Authorities identified the deceased as Elizabeth E. Melton, who was driving a 2024 Buick Encore when her vehicle was involved in a multi-vehicle crash. The incident began when Melton’s SUV collided with a 2019 Land Rover Discovery driven by James Johnson, 65, of Covington, Georgia.
Moments later, a 2024 Volvo tractor-trailer operated by 36-year-old Joshua J. Waiters of Roanoke, Virginia, struck the Buick following the initial impact. As a result of the secondary collision, Melton was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the Buick, 62-year-old David Clark of Carrollton, Georgia, sustained injuries and was transported to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton for medical treatment. No injuries were reported for the other drivers involved.
Troopers with ALEA are continuing their investigation into the crash to determine the exact cause and sequence of events that led to the deadly outcome.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Elizabeth Melton during this difficult time, and we wish David Clark a full and swift recovery.
Multi-Vehicle Crashes and Interstate Fatalities in Alabama
Crashes involving multiple vehicles on Alabama interstates can result in catastrophic consequences, as seen in Sunday morning’s fatal wreck on I-20 in Talladega County. High speeds, lane merging, and traffic density all increase the potential for severe injuries or fatalities, especially when collisions involve passenger vehicles and large commercial trucks.
Elizabeth Melton’s death underscores how quickly a routine drive can turn tragic. In this case, the chain reaction began with a collision between two SUVs before a tractor-trailer struck the already disabled vehicle. The force of impact in such crashes is often devastating, particularly for occupants in smaller passenger vehicles like the 2024 Buick Encore.
David Clark, Melton’s passenger, was fortunate to survive but still required hospitalization—a reminder that even survivors of such crashes may face long and difficult recoveries. Prompt emergency response and access to trauma care at Tanner Medical Center played a vital role in his initial treatment.
Crashes that involve commercial trucks often lead to complex investigations due to the potential for driver fatigue, cargo weight, and braking limitations to contribute to the severity. Commercial operators like the Volvo tractor-trailer driver in this case are held to federal safety standards, which are reviewed whenever such accidents occur.
For families impacted by fatal interstate collisions, the emotional toll is compounded by logistical and legal challenges. Understanding insurance procedures, obtaining crash reports, and navigating wrongful death claims can be overwhelming without support.
