Toney, AL (August 19, 2025) – A deadly two-vehicle crash involving a cattle trailer claimed the life of a local man Monday afternoon in Madison County. According to Huntsville Emergency Medical Services, Inc. (HEMSI) and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the collision occurred around 5:00 PM on August 18 along Old Railroad Bed Road in the Toney community.
ALEA officials confirmed that 43-year-old Christopher Hills was killed when the 2013 Ford Explorer he was driving collided with a Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 67-year-old man from Ardmore. Following the initial impact, Hills’ SUV was struck again by the cattle trailer being hauled by the Silverado.
The crash caused Hills’ vehicle to veer off the roadway, overturn, and catch fire. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Silverado was not reported to be injured. No other vehicles or individuals were involved. The crash remains under investigation by ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Christopher Hills during this incredibly difficult time.
Fatal Rural Collisions in Alabama
Crashes in rural areas like Old Railroad Bed Rd can be particularly severe due to high speeds, large vehicles, and delayed emergency access. In the case of Christopher Hills, the involvement of both a pickup truck and a livestock trailer significantly amplified the force of the crash and the risk of fatal outcomes.
Rollover accidents followed by vehicle fires are especially deadly. The impact of the collision and the secondary hit from the cattle trailer contributed to the Explorer leaving the roadway and igniting. Vehicle fires are often difficult to escape, particularly if a crash has compromised the structural integrity of the car or caused occupants to become trapped.
Old Railroad Bed Rd runs through agricultural and semi-rural zones where large trailers and farm equipment are commonly in use. Drivers in these areas face unique challenges such as blind curves, limited shoulders, and unexpected slow-moving vehicles. This makes awareness and defensive driving crucial.
For families who have lost a loved one in a crash involving commercial or towed equipment, the emotional and legal aftermath can be overwhelming. Thorough investigations are essential to determine contributing factors and whether mechanical failure, improper load securing, or other issues were involved.
