Tucson, AZ (April 7, 2025) – A tragic incident early Monday morning led to the death of a pedestrian on Interstate 10, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS). The deadly crash occurred around 4:06 a.m. near milepost 244, between Cortaro Farms Rd and Tangerine Rd in the Marana area, prompting significant traffic delays and a full closure of the westbound lanes.
Authorities say the sequence of events began when a driver stopped their vehicle on the eastbound shoulder of I-10. For reasons still under investigation, the individual exited their vehicle and attempted to cross the interstate on foot. After running across the eastbound lanes and the center median, the person entered the westbound lanes, where they were struck by multiple vehicles.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after the crash was reported, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of the injuries sustained. The identity of the deceased has not been released, pending family notification.
All lanes of I-10 westbound were shut down for several hours to allow investigators from DPS and crash reconstruction teams to process the scene. The interstate has since been reopened.
Our condolences go out to the loved ones of the person lost in this tragic event.
Pedestrian Fatalities on Interstate Highways
Pedestrian deaths on major highways, such as I-10 in Arizona, are uncommon but particularly devastating when they occur. These environments are not designed for pedestrian traffic, and vehicle speeds are significantly higher, leaving little room for drivers to react when someone enters the roadway unexpectedly.
In this incident, the individual’s decision to stop on the emergency shoulder and cross the interstate remains under investigation. Situations like this may involve a range of contributing factors—mechanical breakdowns, disorientation, or mental health distress—and determining the exact circumstances is a crucial part of the investigation.
High-speed roadways like Interstate 10 are among the most dangerous places for pedestrian encounters. The combination of limited lighting during early morning hours, reduced driver visibility, and high vehicle speeds can lead to fatal outcomes in mere seconds.
Responders, including the Arizona DPS and medical personnel, often face extremely challenging conditions in these scenarios. Even with rapid response times, the severity of injuries in highway pedestrian crashes makes survival rare. The impact of such incidents also affects the drivers involved, many of whom may struggle emotionally despite having had no way to prevent the crash.
Families affected by fatal highway incidents are frequently left searching for answers. Navigating the aftermath—both emotionally and logistically—can be overwhelming. Access to trauma support services, legal resources, and roadway safety education can be essential steps toward healing and understanding.
