Van Horn, TX (September 11, 2025) – A tragic two-vehicle collision outside of Van Horn claimed the life of a 64-year-old Alpine woman early Tuesday morning, after a driver allegedly ran a stop sign while attempting to evade law enforcement.
According to investigators, 19-year-old Kelvin Matthew Lee-Armenta of Harlingen was driving westbound on the I-10 access road when he encountered a Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Trooper. During the encounter, officials say Lee-Armenta continued west, attempting to avoid the officer, and approached the intersection with US-90.
At that same moment, Martha Zabrosky of Alpine was traveling north on US-90. As she neared the intersection, Lee-Armenta reportedly failed to stop at a posted sign and struck her vehicle. Zabrosky sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced deceased at Culberson Hospital by the Justice of the Peace.
Emergency responders rushed Lee-Armenta to UMC for treatment, where he was last listed in stable condition. Authorities have stated that the crash remains under investigation by Texas DPS.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Martha Zabrosky during this incredibly difficult time.
Fatal Crashes and Intersection Risks in Texas
This heartbreaking crash near Van Horn highlights the extreme dangers present at rural intersections, especially when compounded by high-speed travel or evasive actions. While urban crashes often dominate headlines, rural areas like Culberson County present unique hazards—long stretches of open road, limited signage visibility, and reduced enforcement coverage can all contribute to deadly outcomes.
US-90 and the I-10 access road are common routes for both local and through traffic, yet the consequences of ignoring traffic controls at such intersections can be devastating. In this case, the alleged decision to bypass a stop sign not only resulted in a fatal collision but has left two families permanently impacted—one grieving a loss, and the other dealing with legal and medical consequences.
Tragedies like this underscore the importance of respecting traffic laws, especially near highway junctions where visibility and timing are critical. Whether in rural Texas or a major city, intersection safety remains a top concern for public safety agencies.
For those who lose loved ones in preventable accidents, the path forward is never easy. Navigating legal matters, investigations, and grief often requires more than just time—it requires access to trustworthy information and compassionate support.
