Vermilion Parish, LA (September 13, 2025) – A devastating head-on collision early Friday morning on Louisiana Highway 338 resulted in the death of one man and left another seriously injured, according to Louisiana State Police Troop I.
The crash occurred just after 6:00 a.m. on September 12 near Bonvillian Rd. Authorities say 56-year-old Charles Levine of Youngsville was traveling westbound in a 2012 Ford F-150 when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle crossed the center line and entered the eastbound lane. His truck collided head-on with a 2019 GMC Sierra, resulting in a violent impact that caused Levine’s vehicle to become fully engulfed in flames.
Tragically, Levine sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. It is currently unknown whether he was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The driver of the GMC Sierra, who was properly restrained, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
As part of their investigative protocol, state troopers collected routine toxicology samples from both drivers to determine whether impairment may have been a contributing factor. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Charles Levine during this incredibly difficult time, and we wish the injured driver a full and speedy recovery.
Fatal Accidents and Roadway Safety in Louisiana
Fatal collisions like the one on LA Hwy 338 highlight ongoing concerns about driver safety and roadway risks across Louisiana—particularly in rural parishes like Vermilion, where long stretches of two-lane highways leave little room for error. Head-on crashes are among the deadliest types of collisions, often resulting in catastrophic outcomes due to the force of impact and limited escape paths.
This incident underscores the importance of continuous roadway monitoring, clear lane visibility, and defensive driving—especially during early morning hours when lighting and visibility may be limited. In many rural areas, infrastructure challenges and the absence of barriers between opposing lanes further increase the danger.
For families who lose loved ones in crashes, the aftermath can be emotionally and financially devastating. The grief is often compounded by unanswered questions, legal uncertainties, and the burden of sudden loss. Meanwhile, survivors may face long recoveries and complex medical needs. In both cases, having access to trusted resources can provide some clarity and direction.
As investigators continue to work toward understanding the full scope of this crash, the community is reminded of how fragile life can be behind the wheel. Preventing future tragedies will require not only infrastructure solutions but also continued education and responsible driving practices.
