Visalia, CA (August 13, 2025) – A 49-year-old man was killed late Friday night after his SUV collided with the back of a tanker truck on State Route 63 near Avenue 352, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred around 11:21 p.m. when the driver of a 2023 Kenworth commercial semi-truck pulling a gasoline tank trailer slowed to make a left turn onto Avenue 352. CHP reports that the driver of a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox SUV was traveling at high speed and struck the rear of the tank trailer.
Emergency crews pronounced the SUV driver dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending notification of family. The 35-year-old truck driver was uninjured in the crash, and CHP confirmed that no fuel was released from the tanker.
Investigators believe drug use may have been a factor in the crash and noted that the Chevrolet driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact. The collision remains under investigation, and CHP is asking anyone with information to come forward.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this tragic accident.
Fatal Rear-End Collisions in California
Collisions where a vehicle strikes the rear of a slowing or stopped truck often result in severe or fatal injuries, especially when the crash involves large commercial vehicles. The incident on SR-63 near Avenue 352 is a sobering example of how speed, driver impairment, and lack of seatbelt use can contribute to a deadly outcome.
Rear-end crashes involving tanker trucks carry additional hazards due to the potential for hazardous material release. While CHP confirmed that no gasoline leaked in this incident, the force of impact was still significant enough to cause catastrophic damage to the SUV and claim the life of its driver.
In California, impaired driving—whether due to alcohol, drugs, or a combination of substances—remains a leading factor in deadly crashes. Failing to wear a seatbelt further increases the risk of fatal injury, as occupants are more likely to be ejected or suffer critical trauma.
Drivers are urged to maintain safe following distances, remain alert, and adjust speeds when approaching large vehicles that may slow for turns or stops. For families who have lost loved ones in such crashes, legal and financial resources are available to help cover medical costs, funeral expenses, and other damages.
