Voluntown, CT (September 1, 2025) – Two men were hospitalized Sunday morning following a collision between a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a dirt bike on Preston City Road, according to the Connecticut State Police.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:26 a.m. near 276 Preston City Rd. Police say the Harley-Davidson was traveling southbound when it came upon a group of dirt bikes. As it approached, the motorcycle collided with an Acerbis 150 XC-W dirt bike and then veered off the roadway, striking an embankment on the northbound shoulder.
The operator of the Harley-Davidson, identified as a 58-year-old man from Sterling, suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was airlifted by Life Star to Rhode Island Hospital for advanced trauma care. The dirt bike operator, a 26-year-old man from Voluntown, sustained less severe injuries and was transported by local ambulance to Backus Hospital for evaluation.
Both vehicles sustained damage in the crash, and the roadway was temporarily impacted while emergency personnel cleared the scene and launched an investigation. The Connecticut State Police are continuing to investigate and have asked any witnesses to contact Trooper Timothy Wengloski.
We send our best wishes for a full recovery to both individuals involved.
Motorcycle and Off-Road Vehicle Crashes in Connecticut
Accidents involving motorcycles and off-road vehicles like dirt bikes are particularly dangerous due to the lack of external protection and the potential for high-impact collisions. The crash in Voluntown underscores the risks riders face when multiple types of vehicles share the roadway, especially in rural areas where traffic dynamics can be unpredictable.
Preston City Road, which runs through a wooded and less densely populated stretch of Voluntown, is frequently used by recreational riders and motorcyclists alike. Although scenic and often quiet, these roads can pose serious hazards due to limited visibility, sudden curves, and inconsistent shoulder space.
In this case, the collision between a Harley-Davidson and a dirt bike likely involved a sudden change in speed or spacing—factors that can quickly escalate into a serious crash. The use of Life Star medical transport indicates the severity of injuries sustained by the motorcycle rider, while the dirt bike operator’s minor injuries still required immediate medical attention.
Connecticut has seen increased awareness campaigns focused on motorcycle and dirt bike safety, including helmet use, proper licensing, and awareness of mixed-vehicle roadways. However, crashes like this highlight the importance of caution and communication between all riders, whether on traditional motorcycles or off-road equipment.
For those injured in these types of accidents, recovery may involve not only physical rehabilitation but also legal and insurance complexities. It’s vital to seek support and understand your rights—particularly when different types of vehicles and potentially unclear road use rules are involved.
