Volusia County, FL (September 22, 2025) – A 20-year-old man from Spring Hill was tragically killed Sunday evening after being struck by a vehicle while standing near his disabled truck on International Speedway Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The fatal collision occurred just before 9:00 p.m. near Red John Dr. Investigators say the man’s 1997 Ford F250 had become disabled and was partially blocking the westbound outside lane of the roadway. While standing in the same westbound lane, the man was struck by an oncoming 2017 Ford F250.
Emergency responders pronounced the young man dead at the scene. The occupants of the second vehicle, a 67-year-old woman and a 67-year-old man, both from DeLand, were not injured in the crash. At this time, no charges have been announced, and the incident remains under investigation.
Authorities have not disclosed whether hazard lights were activated or if any roadside assistance had been contacted prior to the crash.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.
Roadside Safety and Pedestrian Fatalities in Florida
Standing outside a vehicle on a high-speed roadway poses extreme risk, particularly at night when visibility is limited and traffic volumes may still be significant. International Speedway Boulevard, a major corridor in Volusia County, is frequently used by both local and long-distance drivers, making even brief stops on the shoulder or travel lanes particularly dangerous.
This heartbreaking incident highlights a dangerous reality: disabled vehicles on active roadways continue to be a major contributor to secondary crashes. In this case, a young man simply standing near his truck—possibly assessing damage or seeking help—lost his life due to the hazardous position of the vehicle and the speed of surrounding traffic.
Florida consistently ranks among the top states for pedestrian fatalities, and incidents involving disabled vehicles are especially tragic because they are often unavoidable for the victim. Even a brief moment spent outside a stalled car can prove fatal without proper visibility, reflective gear, or adequate distance from moving lanes.
For those experiencing vehicle trouble, the best option—if it can be done safely—is to move the car fully off the roadway, activate hazard lights, and remain inside the vehicle while waiting for help. If standing outside is necessary, doing so from the safest possible location—preferably well off the traffic lanes—is critical.
In fatal roadside crashes, surviving family members often face an overwhelming wave of grief, logistical tasks, and unanswered questions. Navigating insurance claims, autopsy reports, and investigative updates only adds to the emotional toll.
