Voorheesville, NY (August 19, 2025) – A 16-year-old girl was injured Monday afternoon when her vehicle was struck by a CSX freight train after she attempted to bypass lowered crossing arms at South Main St and Prospect St. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m., prompting a swift response from deputies with the Albany County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Sheriff Craig D. Apple, Sr., the teenager drove around the safety barriers while the train was approaching the crossing. Moments later, the CSX train collided with her vehicle, forcefully pushing it off the tracks. Despite the severity of the impact, the young driver sustained only minor injuries. She was treated at the scene before being transported to Albany Medical Center for further evaluation.
Investigators confirmed that the train’s onboard dash camera captured the entire event. CSX officials are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The teen has been issued multiple traffic citations and is expected to appear in New Scotland Town Court at a later date.
We are grateful that this incident did not result in more serious injuries and extend our support to the young driver as she recovers.
Train-Vehicle Collisions in New York
Collisions between trains and vehicles are among the most dangerous transportation incidents, often resulting in catastrophic consequences. In Voorheesville, Monday’s crash is a sobering example of the risks associated with attempting to bypass railroad crossing signals and barriers. While the driver in this case was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries, many such accidents have far more tragic outcomes.
South Main St and Prospect St sit near active CSX rail lines, where regular train activity and controlled crossings require full compliance with safety measures. Stop arms, flashing lights, and warning bells are designed to prevent collisions by providing drivers with ample notice. Disregarding these indicators, whether intentionally or due to distraction or misjudgment, places both the driver and train personnel at significant risk.
Teen drivers, in particular, may underestimate the dangers of crossing tracks too soon. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of education, vigilance, and patience when approaching railroad intersections.
Train accidents can also have a ripple effect—disrupting freight schedules, impacting nearby roadways, and placing stress on emergency services. Though the CSX train crew was unharmed, they too often face emotional distress from incidents that are outside their control.
