E-Bike Safety and Rural Intersection Risks in South Carolina
This fatal crash brings attention to the growing presence of electric bicycles on both urban and rural roadways in South Carolina. While e-bikes offer an eco-friendly and affordable transportation option, they also come with unique safety concerns—particularly when used in high-speed or multi-lane traffic areas without dedicated cycling infrastructure.
Rural intersections like Wagener Trail Rd and Wagener Rd pose specific challenges for cyclists and drivers alike. Limited signage visibility, minimal lighting, and lack of traffic signals can all contribute to delayed reaction times and misjudged crossings. In such environments, adherence to stop signs and heightened awareness from all road users are essential to preventing deadly outcomes.
As e-bike usage continues to rise across the state, safety advocates are calling for increased public education, better roadway integration, and clear rules for shared spaces. Drivers are also urged to remain vigilant for less visible road users—such as cyclists—especially during dusk or nighttime hours when visibility is reduced.
