Waimalu, HI (August 26, 2025) – A multi-vehicle collision on the H-1 Freeway eastbound caused significant traffic disruptions early Tuesday morning near the Kaahumanu overpass in Waimalu. The crash was reported around 4:00 a.m. and blocked four lanes of traffic, leaving only the two outer lanes partially open for commuters.
Honolulu Police and EMS crews responded to the scene, where multiple vehicles sustained damage. Officials confirmed that at least three individuals required medical assistance. One victim was transported to a hospital in stable condition, while two others declined transport after being treated at the scene. Emergency responders worked alongside four tow trucks to clear the roadway.
The crash caused severe traffic congestion, with backups reported all the way to Kunia. At 6:30 a.m., the Hawaii Department of Transportation announced that the zipperlane would be opened to all vehicles to ease morning delays. By sunrise, all lanes had reopened, though officials warned that slow conditions would persist throughout the morning commute.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

Multi-Vehicle Crashes and Traffic Impacts in Hawaii
Crashes on major corridors like the H-1 Freeway are especially disruptive due to the high commuter volume during morning hours. Multi-vehicle collisions often lead to significant lane closures and ripple effects across Oahu’s roadway network.
According to the Hawaii Department of Transportation, multi-vehicle crashes account for a considerable portion of freeway accidents across the island. In 2024, morning collisions were a leading cause of prolonged congestion in Honolulu, particularly along H-1, where traffic density is highest.
For those injured, even stable conditions may require ongoing medical care, while others may deal with long-term physical or emotional recovery. Commuters also face daily risks from sudden slowdowns, secondary crashes, and delays caused by congestion.
