Waiʻanae, HI (January 5, 2026) – A 42-year-old woman lost her life early on Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Farrington Hwy near Liliana St in the Maʻili neighborhood of Waiʻanae. The incident occurred on January 4 around 6:30 a.m., according to the Honolulu Police Department.

Authorities reported that a 50-year-old man was driving westbound on Farrington Hwy with a 46-year-old passenger when he hit the pedestrian, who was crossing the roadway outside of a marked crosswalk. EMS responded to the scene and treated the woman for multiple life-threatening injuries. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but later died as a result of her injuries.

The driver and passenger remained at the scene and were not hurt. At this time, investigators do not believe that speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision. The investigation is ongoing.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this accident.

Pedestrian Fatalities in Hawaii

The deadly crash in the Maʻili area illustrates the persistent danger pedestrians face along high-speed corridors like Farrington Hwy. In many communities across Hawaiʻi, particularly in rural and suburban zones like Waiʻanae, infrastructure such as crosswalks or pedestrian signals may be limited, making roadside travel especially hazardous during early morning hours.

In this case, the woman was crossing outside of a designated crosswalk when she was struck, a scenario that highlights the vulnerability of pedestrians even in areas with lower visibility or traffic volumes. Despite the absence of suspected impairment or speed, the outcome was tragically fatal.

Hawaiʻi continues to grapple with pedestrian safety concerns, with state and local agencies emphasizing public awareness campaigns, improved signage, and community-specific interventions. However, even with those efforts, the lack of marked crossings and lighting remains a challenge for both drivers and pedestrians in regions like Waiʻanae.

For families impacted by pedestrian fatalities, the emotional toll is immediate and overwhelming. Access to timely information, support networks, and legal guidance can be essential steps in the aftermath.
