Waldorf, MD (August 11, 2025) – A tragic house fire in Waldorf claimed the lives of four children and two adults Sunday morning, according to officials. Crews from the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department, Charles County Volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Services, and surrounding departments were dispatched to the 3000 block of Declaration Ct N at around 8:40 a.m. for reports of a dwelling fire with people trapped inside.
Authorities said nine people were linked to the home at the time. Two survivors escaped the blaze, and two others were not at the residence when the fire began. The six victims were discovered after crews fought to control the flames for more than an hour. One firefighter was hospitalized for a medical emergency, and another was treated on the scene.
Master Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire said the fire originated on the right side of the home within an enclosed porch. Heavy equipment was brought in to remove debris, and the cause remains under investigation. Officials have not confirmed whether the home had working smoke alarms.
Our deepest condolences go out to the families and community members affected by this heartbreaking loss.
Residential Fires in Maryland
Fires like Sunday’s in Waldorf are devastating reminders of the importance of fire prevention and preparedness. Residential fires can spread rapidly, especially in enclosed spaces, and may become deadly within minutes. In Maryland, common causes of house fires include electrical malfunctions, cooking incidents, and heating equipment failures.
Officials stress that working smoke alarms and practiced home escape plans can significantly improve survival chances in a house fire. Fire marshals recommend that alarms be tested monthly, batteries replaced at least once a year, and every household member know at least two ways out of every room.
