Wapakoneta, OH (August 1, 2025) – A late-night crash in Wapakoneta resulted in serious injuries for three individuals and has prompted a continuing investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of State Route 197 and Conant Road.
According to the Wapakoneta post of OSHP, 22-year-old Jeffrey Odenweller of Elida was traveling southbound when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign. His vehicle entered the intersection and collided with a westbound truck driven by 35-year-old Michael S. Makar of Spencerville.
Following the collision, both vehicles veered off the left side of State Route 197. Odenweller’s car came to rest nearby, while the truck overturned as a result of the impact. Emergency responders from Cridersville EMS and Spencerville EMS quickly arrived on scene to assist the injured parties.
Odenweller, who was not wearing a safety belt at the time of the crash, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Mercy Health–St. Rita’s Medical Center. The truck’s driver, Makar, and his 35-year-old passenger, Tara Skeens—both of Spencerville—were also hospitalized with serious injuries. Authorities confirmed that both truck occupants had been wearing seat belts.
OSHP has stated that alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as troopers work to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
Our thoughts are with the victims as they continue receiving medical care, and we hope for their full recoveries.
DUI-Related Crashes in Ohio
Crashes caused by impaired drivers remain a serious public safety concern across Ohio. The collision Wednesday night in Wapakoneta illustrates the devastating consequences that can occur when a driver ignores a stop sign and possibly operates a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Intersections such as SR 197 and Conant Road can quickly become dangerous zones when right-of-way laws are not followed.
In this incident, the reported failure to stop combined with suspected impairment has resulted in three hospitalizations, one of whom—Odenweller—was not wearing a safety belt. Seat belt use remains one of the most critical factors in survivability during high-impact crashes, and its absence often contributes to more severe injuries.
Ohio’s law enforcement agencies continue to combat impaired driving through targeted patrols and public education campaigns, but despite these efforts, DUI-related crashes still account for a significant portion of traffic-related injuries and deaths statewide. These incidents not only harm victims physically and emotionally but also result in long-term financial and legal consequences for the at-fault driver.
For victims of suspected DUI crashes, the aftermath can be especially painful. Medical bills, trauma recovery, and legal questions can all create overwhelming stress—particularly when multiple parties are injured.
