Washington County, MO (August 4, 2025) – A 63-year-old woman from St. Clair suffered serious injuries Sunday afternoon after her motorcycle was rear-ended by a van on Missouri Route 185 at Lick Skillett, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The crash occurred at approximately 1:14 p.m. on August 3.
Authorities report that the woman was riding a 2011 Harley-Davidson FXDC northbound on MO-185 when she slowed down to avoid an object in the roadway. A 2011 Ford E150 van, also traveling northbound, failed to stop in time and struck the rear of the motorcycle.
The impact caused the motorcycle to be totaled. The rider, who was wearing a helmet, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted by Life Flight to Mercy Hospital St. Louis for emergency treatment. The 66-year-old driver of the van, a Potosi resident, was not injured and was able to drive his vehicle from the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt, according to the crash report.
Trooper A. Pogue investigated the collision, which remains under review.
Our thoughts are with the injured rider, and we hope for her full and swift recovery.
Rear-End Motorcycle Crashes in Missouri
Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable in rear-end collisions, even at relatively low speeds. Unlike passengers in cars, riders lack the structural protection of an enclosed vehicle, making them far more susceptible to serious injury or death. Sunday’s crash on MO-185 in Washington County demonstrates how quickly these incidents can unfold—often with life-altering consequences.
In this case, the motorcyclist acted appropriately by slowing down for an object in the road, but the following driver failed to react in time. Rear-end crashes are frequently linked to driver inattention, following too closely, or distracted driving—issues that are particularly dangerous when motorcycles are involved due to their smaller profile and sudden deceleration needs.
Despite wearing safety gear, the injured rider required air transport to a trauma center, highlighting the severity of her injuries. Head trauma, spinal injuries, and multiple fractures are common outcomes in crashes like these, even when helmets and protective clothing are used.
For victims and their families, the aftermath of a motorcycle crash can be overwhelming. Emergency treatment, extended recovery times, and potential loss of income add to the emotional and physical toll. Determining liability and securing compensation requires timely documentation and support from professionals familiar with these complex cases.
