Washington Township, PA (July 28, 2025) – A tragic motorcycle crash in Butler County left one woman dead and another person seriously injured Saturday afternoon, as emergency crews responded to a scene along the route of a charity ride.
Just after 1:00 p.m. on July 26, Pennsylvania State Police were dispatched to a crash on Route 38 (Oneida Valley Rd) near the intersection with Annisville Rd. Upon arrival, officers found a three-wheeled motorcycle off the roadway and in a nearby creek bed. The crash occurred during the “Riding for the Cure” charity event, and several fellow motorcyclists reportedly stopped to assist before first responders arrived.
According to investigators, the motorcycle was traveling southbound on Route 38 when the driver began to veer off the roadway, crossed the centerline, and struck a guiderail. The passenger, identified as 66-year-old Betty E. Campbell of Butler, was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital for further treatment. His condition has not been publicly updated.
The crash is under investigation by Pennsylvania State Police. No other vehicles were reported to be involved, and it is not yet known what caused the operator to lose control.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of Betty Campbell, and we extend wishes for a full recovery to the injured rider.
Motorcycle Accidents in Pennsylvania
The deadly crash on Route 38 in Washington Township underscores the vulnerability of motorcycle riders, particularly during group rides and charity events where large numbers of riders share the road. While intended to unite the community, these events can also increase exposure to high-risk situations—especially on winding rural roads like Oneida Valley Rd.
In this case, the three-wheeled motorcycle veered off course just before reaching Annisville Rd and collided with a roadside barrier. Such collisions are often unforgiving for motorcycle passengers, who lack the protective features of enclosed vehicles. Rural roads may present additional hazards, including uneven pavement, narrow shoulders, and limited guardrail clearance—all of which can contribute to fatal outcomes in the event of a crash.
Pennsylvania sees a significant number of motorcycle accidents each year, many involving serious or fatal injuries. Older riders, like the 66-year-old victim in this incident, may be especially vulnerable to the effects of impact trauma. Events like “Riding for the Cure,” though noble in cause, require careful planning and heightened awareness due to increased traffic volume and mixed skill levels among participants.
After a motorcycle accident, families often face a combination of grief, unanswered questions, and complicated insurance or legal matters. It is crucial to seek appropriate support in the days and weeks that follow—whether for funeral planning, medical care, or help understanding investigation procedures.
